Method of Manufacture
The three general types of manufactured bottles
are “free-blown”, “hand-blown
into mold” (abbreviated as BIM ), and “automatic
bottle machine” (ABM). The great allure of free-blown or
mold-blown antique bottles lies in their individual, hand-crafted
qualities. No two are alike. Because of this, the most widely
sought-after bottles are those that were “hand-blown” (actually
mouth blown, the tools held by hand.) There are exceptions to
this rule in individual bottles and even entire categories. A
couple of good examples are 20th century sodas and milks, which
were made almost exclusively in automatic bottle machines. In
such recent categories, rarity outranks method of manufacture,
and some of these bottles can command prices in the hundreds
and even thousands of dollars. On the other side of the coin,
very common types of hand-blown bottles dating back 100 years
or more may be worth very little.
